Cricket: India's defeat to Pakistan was 'unacceptable', says chief selector Chetan Sharma
Chetan Sharma, chief selector of the Indian cricket team, termed India's defeat to Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 Super Four match as ‘unacceptable’.
India lost to Pakistan by five wickets on Sunday after Mohammad Rizwan's half-century and Naseem Shah's last-over six powered Pakistan to victory at the Dubai International Stadium.
India had already lost their first Super Four match to Sri Lanka, and the defeat to Pakistan all but ended their chances of reaching the final of the tournament.
Sharma, speaking to the media after the match, said that India's performance in the tournament had been "below par" and that the team would need to improve significantly in the remaining matches.
He also said that the team would be making some changes to the squad for the T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia in October and November.
"We have to take responsibility for this defeat," Sharma said. "We didn't play well enough, and we have to learn from our mistakes and improve.
Sharma also said that the team would be looking to bring in some new players for the T20 World Cup.
"We have a lot of players who are capable of playing at the highest level," he said. "We will be looking to bring in some new players for the T20 World Cup, and we will be confident of doing well in the tournament.
India will next face Afghanistan in their final Super Four match on Thursday. They will then play Pakistan in the final if they win that match.
