Former Atlanta Dream Guard Departs After One Season

The Los Angeles Sparks have waived guard Chennedy Carter after one season with the team, the team announced Friday. Carter, who was acquired from the Atlanta Dream prior to last season in exchange for a first-round pick, appeared in 20 games for the Sparks in 2023, averaging 5.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

The Sparks' decision to waive Carter comes as the team continues to reshape its roster under new head coach Curt Miller. Miller, who was hired in December, has already made several moves to bring in new players, including signing free agent guard Jordin Canada and trading for forward Aaliyah Boston.

Carter, the fourth overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, was expected to be a key part of the Sparks' future when she was acquired last year. However, she struggled to find a consistent role with the team and was often overshadowed by more experienced guards like Lexie Brown and Kristi Toliver.

The Sparks are now left with a young and inexperienced backcourt. Canada, Brown, and Toliver are all over the age of 30, and the team has no other guards on its roster with more than two years of WNBA experience.

Carter's departure opens up a roster spot for the Sparks, who could use it to sign another guard or add depth to another position. The team has been linked to several free agents in recent weeks, including former MVP Elena Delle Donne and guard Odyssey Sims.
