87-Year-Old Pontiff a Longtime Advocate for Ethical AI

Pontiff Takes Message to G7 Summit

ROME (AP) — Friar Paolo Benanti wears the plain brown robes of his medieval Franciscan order as he walks through the halls of the Vatican, carrying a message from Pope Francis on one of the most pressing issues of our time: artificial intelligence.

The 87-year-old pontiff has long been an advocate for the ethical development and use of AI. Last December, he called for a binding international treaty regulating AI's development and advancement.

Pope Francis is now taking his call to the Group of 7 industrialized nations. He will address the G7 summit in Taormina, Sicily, on Friday, where he will urge leaders to work together to ensure that AI is used for the benefit of humanity, not to its detriment.

"Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that has the potential to do great good," Benanti said. "But it is also a tool that can be used for evil. We need to have clear ethical guidelines in place to ensure that AI is used for good and not for evil."
